Duke of Edinburgh Adventures
On a rather chilly Friday evening at the end of January myself and over 20 other Guides, Senior Section and leaders from across Birmingham county gathered to begin a residential weekend filled with training sessions to equip us for the start of our DofE journey, led by Gilrguiding Birmingham’s Duke of Edinburgh team.
The weekend started off with some fun ice breakers on Friday evening before we started learning map reading skills and how to properly use a compass on Saturday morning. We then put what we’d learnt into practice, with the Bronze, Silver and Gold groups splitting off to navigate our way around Lickey Hills: we embraced the slightly damp and chilly weather and the inevitable mud and had a great time! Refuelled by some warm food and drink we then spent the evening making hot chocolate on a Trangia and learning how to pack our bags for our upcoming expeditions. On Sunday morning we then looked at route planning and pitched some tents (which is deceptively easy when you’re in a warm and dry hall!) before returning home for a well-earned nap!
Thank you to all of the staff who organised and ran the weekend: we all had a brilliant jam-packed weekend, learnt a lot and made some new guiding friends!
