Birmingham Pride 2015
Birmingham Pride 2015 has been hailed the biggest and most successful in its history with more than 75,000 spectators turning out to support the parade through the city centre and over 60,000 more attending the festival….and Girlguiding Birmingham was there!
Over the bank holiday weekend of the 23/24 May, Girlguiding volunteers handed out freebies during the parade and manned a charity stand at Birmingham Pride to shout out about how great we are. The parade drew in huge crowds all across Birmingham and the streets around the community stands and band stages were full of excitement and party spirit. Over the weekend we spoke to hundreds of people about the great work that Girlguiding Birmingham is doing and the opportunities that the organisation can provide for girls of all backgrounds and ages across the city. We really wanted to reinforce the message that we are for all girls!
We spoke to a variety of people ranging from current members to those that hadn’t before heard of our organisation (even the Scouts loved our stand!). It was really rewarding to be able to speak to existing members who said that being part of Girlguiding really helped give them a space to develop. We encouraged everybody to fill in our “girls can…” postcards and had a great range of responses…girls really can do anything!
In addition to chatting to people about what Girlguiding offers we also had stickers, pin badges, sweets and goodie bags available as well as face paints and even a bubble machine, which everybody loved! This event gave us some great access to lots of fun, enthusiastic potential volunteers and the fun atmosphere was ideal to show off how great guiding is. The weekend was a great success and we are really proud that we have managed to be part of it. A huge thanks goes to Friends of Girlguiding Birmingham (FoGB), Girlguiding Midlands and Girlguiding UK for your support…and not forgetting thanks to the amazing array of fantastic volunteers that helped over the 2 days!
